So Sánh Với Các Mô Hình Staking và LSD Truyền Thống
Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs) / Liquid Staking:
Liquid Restaking (LRTs) / Liquid Restaking:

Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs) have undeniably reshaped the DeFi landscape, offering participants the ability to earn staking rewards while maintaining liquidity. However, this innovation, while powerful, introduces a complex web of interconnectedness and potential systemic risks that warrant a skeptical, critical examination. As of mid-2026, the sector stands at a crossroads, balancing unprecedented capital efficiency with a growing concentration of power and emergent vulnerabilities.
Key Takeaways
- Liquid Staking remains the largest sector by Total Value Locked (TVL) in DeFi, driven by the demand for capital efficiency, but its USD-denominated TVL has seen a significant decline in Q2 2026, signaling market weakness.
- While LSDs unlock liquidity for staked assets, their deep integration across DeFi protocols (Lending, DEXs, Restaking) creates new systemic risk vectors, including smart contract vulnerabilities, de-pegging, and contagion.
- Lido Finance continues to dominate the Ethereum liquid staking market, raising significant decentralization concerns and debates within the Ethereum community about its influence over network security and governance.
- Emerging trends like Liquid Restaking (LRTs) promise even higher yields but introduce additional layers of complexity and compounded smart contract risk, potentially magnifying future systemic shocks.
- Regulatory scrutiny is increasing, and the long-term stability of DeFi will hinge on robust risk management, transparent governance, and a proactive approach to mitigating the inherent dangers of interconnected leverage.
Market Context: A Shifting Tide for DeFi and LSDs
The DeFi ecosystem, in August 2026, presents a mixed picture. While the overall market size is projected to reach an estimated $238.54 billion by the end of 2026, growing to $770.56 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 26.43% (Mordor Intelligence, 2026), recent performance indicates underlying pressures. Total Value Locked (TVL) across all liquid staking protocols fell to a two-year low of $33.4 billion in Q2 2026, according to CryptoRank (2026). This represents a cumulative decline of 56.1% from a record high of $76.0 billion in Q3 2025. This USD-denominated decline reflects broader market weakness and reduced risk appetite across the DeFi landscape.
However, the narrative shifts when viewed through the lens of native assets. TVL in Ethereum liquid staking protocols, when measured in ETH, only slightly declined to 14.5 million ETH in Q2 2026, a mere 1.3% down from its All-Time High of 14.7 million ETH in Q1 2026 (CryptoRank, 2026). This dichotomy suggests that while the dollar value of staked assets has depreciated with the broader crypto market, the fundamental demand for ETH liquid staking remains resilient, with users not aggressively leaving the sector.
Sentiment is cautious. The euphoric growth cycles of previous years have given way to a more discerning market, where “real revenues” and sustainable cash flows are increasingly valued over token emission-based models (Ancilar, 2025; Dwellir, 2026). Institutions, such as BlackRock and Franklin Templeton, are actively exploring real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, with 78% of institutional investors reporting interest in regulated staking derivatives (Dwellir, 2026). This indicates a maturation, but also a demand for more robust, transparent, and less volatile financial products within the decentralized realm.
Deep Dive: Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs)
The Rise of LSDs: Unlocking Staked Capital
Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs), also known as Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs), emerged as a pivotal innovation in the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) era, particularly following Ethereum’s Merge. Traditional staking locks up assets, rendering them illiquid for the duration of the staking period. LSD protocols address this by issuing a derivative token (e.g., stETH, rETH) that represents the user’s staked position and accrued rewards. This token is then freely tradable and composable across the broader DeFi ecosystem, allowing users to earn staking rewards while simultaneously deploying their capital in other DeFi activities like lending, borrowing, or providing liquidity. This “double-dipping” of yield has been a primary driver of their exponential growth.
As of April 2026, the total liquid staking TVL stood at $42.09 billion, solidifying its position as one of the largest sectors in decentralized finance (DEXTools, 2026). By Q2 2026, liquid staking was the largest sector by TVL, driven largely by demand for capital efficiency on Ethereum and Solana (KuCoin, 2026).
Tokenomics and Mechanics
LSD protocols operate by pooling users’ ETH (or other PoS assets) and staking them through a network of validators. In return, users receive an LST that typically accrues staking rewards automatically, either by increasing the number of tokens in the user’s wallet (rebasing tokens like stETH) or by increasing the token’s exchange rate against the underlying asset (non-rebasing tokens like rETH). The native token of the LSD protocol (e.g., LDO for Lido, RPL for Rocket Pool) often serves as a governance token, allowing holders to vote on protocol parameters, fee structures, and validator selection.
For instance, Lido Finance charges a 10% protocol fee on staking rewards, which is then distributed to node operators and the Lido DAO treasury. Stakers receive 90% of the rewards, while 5% goes to node operators and 5% to the DAO (Lido Finance Review, 2026). Rocket Pool, on the other hand, implemented its Saturn 1 upgrade in February 2026, which activates an RPL “fee switch” to route approximately 9% of protocol revenue to staked RPL holders, paid out in ETH rather than through token inflation (CoinMarketCap, 2026; The Defiant, 2026). This shift towards real ETH yield for RPL holders marks a significant evolution in tokenomics, aiming for sustainable value accrual linked directly to protocol usage and revenue.
On-Chain Analytics: Tracking LSD Growth and Integration
On-chain data reveals the intricate web LSDs have woven throughout DeFi. While the overall USD TVL in liquid staking protocols has seen a downtrend recently, dropping to $33.4 billion in Q2 2026 (CryptoRank, 2026), the underlying ETH TVL remains robust at 14.5 million ETH, signaling continued user engagement with the core value proposition of liquid staking.
The composability of LSTs is evident in their widespread use as collateral in lending protocols like Aave and Compound, as well as in liquidity pools on decentralized exchanges (DEXs). This re-hypothecation of staked assets amplifies capital efficiency, but also creates deep interdependencies. For example, a significant portion of stETH is often used as collateral for borrowing other assets or for further yield farming strategies, forming complex “money legos” that can be difficult to unwind during periods of stress.
Beyond traditional DeFi, the rise of “Liquid Restaking Tokens” (LRTs) through protocols like EigenLayer has further complicated the landscape. EigenLayer, which introduced the concept of restaking, allows users to restake their ETH or LSTs to secure additional Actively Validated Services (AVSs), earning extra yield on top of standard Ethereum staking rewards. EigenLayer dominates the restaking market with approximately 94% market share, with Ether.Fi being the largest LRT protocol with around $4.9 billion in TVL as of May 2026 (Koinly, 2026; Spark, 2026). This layering of yield opportunities, while attractive, introduces new vectors for smart contract risk and potential slashing penalties from multiple protocols simultaneously.
The Other Side: Systemic Risks and Centralization Concerns
The innovation brought by LSDs is undeniable, but so are the risks. The pursuit of capital efficiency has inadvertently created new vulnerabilities, challenging the very decentralization ethos that underpins DeFi and Ethereum.
Centralization Vectors
The most pressing concern revolves around the concentration of staked ETH within a few dominant liquid staking protocols, primarily Lido Finance. As of Q2 2026, Lido continues to be the largest liquid staking provider, though its exact market share fluctuates, with some reports placing its staked ETH at around 30% of the total on the Beacon Chain (Gate Learn, 2026; Lido Finance Review, 2026). Earlier discussions in 2022 highlighted Lido’s significant share, with some community members debating whether it should voluntarily limit its market dominance to mitigate risks. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has explicitly called staking centralization “one of the biggest risks” to the Ethereum Layer 1 network (The Block, 2024; Bitfinex Blog, 2024).
The concern isn’t merely ideological; it’s about network security and credible neutrality. If a single entity or a small cartel of entities controls a disproportionate share of staked ETH, they could potentially exert influence over transaction ordering, censorship, or even challenge the network’s consensus mechanism. While Lido DAO has mechanisms in place and has proposed dual-token governance (LDO and stETH) to prevent monopolization, the sheer scale of its operations presents an inherent concentration risk. Centralized exchanges also contribute to this problem by offering liquid staking services, consolidating large pools of ETH and creating a single point of failure.
Smart Contract Risks and De-pegging Events
LSDs rely on complex smart contract architectures, which are inherently susceptible to vulnerabilities and exploits. A bug in the staking, token, withdrawal, or integration contracts could lead to significant fund loss. This is not a theoretical risk; the DeFi space has a history of smart contract exploits causing millions in losses (QuillAudits, 2024). Furthermore, the composability that makes LSDs so powerful also magnifies the impact of such failures, as an exploit in one integrated protocol could cascade through others that rely on the affected LST as collateral or liquidity.
Another critical risk is de-pegging. While LSTs are designed to closely track the value of their underlying staked assets, they are not hard-pegged. During periods of market stress or liquidity crunch, LSTs can trade at a discount to the underlying asset, leading to significant losses for holders, especially those with leveraged positions. The de-pegging of stETH in mid-2022, though temporary, served as a stark reminder of this vulnerability, fueled by liquidity crises in other centralized crypto entities that held large amounts of stETH. Analysis of historical data shows a correlation between market volatility and de-pegging events (CLS Global, 2025).
Liquidity Fragmentation and Contagion
The rapid growth and interconnectedness of DeFi protocols, particularly those leveraging LSDs and LRTs, create a fertile ground for systemic risk and contagion. “Informational contagion,” “direct contagion,” and “common exposure” are mechanisms by which distress can spread rapidly through the network. The unwinding of collateral positions or stablecoin reserves in DeFi can lead to rapid price dislocations, liquidation spirals, and cross-protocol contagion.
The layering of yield strategies, where LSTs are restaked to earn additional rewards, further intensifies these risks. As noted by Sigma Prime (2024), liquid restaking protocols, while offering increased flexibility and capital efficiency, introduce several exploitable risks, including reentrancy attacks, Denial-of-Service (DoS) vulnerabilities, and incorrect reward distributions, especially with complex integrations like EigenLayer. The “lack of centralized backstops, along with the algorithmic governance and large leverage,” further enhances the risk of local perturbations developing into system-wide contagion (The Tie, 2022). Recent examples, such as the Stream Finance and Elixir collapse in November 2025, demonstrated how opaque dependencies, poor risk management, and collateral reuse could amplify systemic fragility across structured product markets in DeFi.
“The bigger structural risk in DeFi is not volatility. It is idle capital.” – Justin Havins (Dwellir, 2026)
This quote, while initially seeming to champion capital efficiency, underscores the double-edged nature of LSDs. While they activate “idle capital,” they also introduce the risks associated with that activation, particularly when leverage and interconnectedness are involved.
Opportunities and Innovation: Beyond Simple Staking
LSDfi: A New Frontier
Despite the inherent risks, the innovation stemming from Liquid Staking Derivatives is undeniable. The concept of “LSDfi” (DeFi built on top of LSDs) represents a significant evolution, creating new primitives and opportunities within the decentralized finance landscape. These protocols allow for even more sophisticated strategies, such as using LSTs as collateral for synthetic assets, engaging in fixed-rate lending/borrowing with LSTs, or creating structured products that offer diversified yield profiles.
This pursuit of composability and capital efficiency continues to drive development. Protocols are not only focused on maximizing yield but also on building more robust, transparent, and user-friendly platforms. The shift towards revenue-generating protocols, where fees are captured from actual usage rather than token emissions, signals a maturation of the ecosystem and a focus on sustainable economic models (Ancilar, 2025; Dwellir, 2026).
Case Study: Rocket Pool’s Decentralized Approach
While Lido dominates the liquid staking market, Rocket Pool offers a compelling alternative built on principles of greater decentralization and permissionless participation. Launched in November 2021, Rocket Pool routes staking capital through a network of independent node operators, requiring a lower barrier to entry (minimum 4 ETH bond as of February 2026, down from 8 ETH after the Saturn 1 upgrade) compared to solo staking (32 ETH). This model aims to foster a more distributed validator set, reducing the centralization risk inherent in larger, more centralized providers.
Bright Side: Rocket Pool’s Saturn 1 upgrade, launched in February 2026, significantly lowered the node operator bond to 4 ETH, doubling potential network capacity and making validator operation more accessible (The Defiant, 2026; Rocket Pool Governance, 2026). Critically, it activated the RPL “fee switch,” transitioning the RPL token’s value accrual from inflationary rewards to a direct share of the protocol’s ETH revenue (CoinMarketCap, 2026; The Defiant, 2026). This aligns RPL holder incentives directly with the protocol’s success and operational revenue, a move toward more sustainable tokenomics. As of March 2026, Rocket Pool was the third-largest Ethereum liquid staking provider with nearly $1.2 billion in TVL (The Defiant, 2026). Its commitment to a permissionless node operator network of over 1,500 active operators globally enhances Ethereum’s censorship resistance and credible neutrality. User reviews praise its governance and censorship resistance.
Dark Side: Despite its decentralized advantages, Rocket Pool faces challenges. Its rETH token typically experiences lower liquidity compared to stETH, which can lead to wider spreads and greater price impact for large trades (CoinMarketCap, 2026; Rocket Pool Governance, 2026). While Saturn 1 aims to improve liquidity, achieving parity with Lido’s deep liquidity networks remains an uphill battle. The complexity of running a node, even with a lower ETH bond, still presents a barrier for many retail users compared to the simplicity of Lido or centralized exchange staking. Furthermore, while RPL’s new fee switch is a positive step, the protocol’s growth has been slower than its dominant competitor, and RPL’s price prediction for 2026, ranging up to $19.01, still reflects a smaller market cap than LDO (Cryptopolitan, 2026). The risk of validator slashing remains, as with any staking protocol, if node operators act maliciously or unreliably.
Competitive Landscape and Future Outlook
LSD Wars: The Battle for Dominance
The liquid staking market remains highly competitive, often referred to as “LSD Wars.” Lido Finance continues to hold the largest market share, leveraging its early mover advantage and deep integrations across the DeFi ecosystem. However, the debate around its centralization has opened avenues for competitors like Rocket Pool, which prioritizes decentralization. Other players such as Binance Staked ETH (WBETH) cater to centralized exchange users seeking simplicity, while platforms like Jito and Sanctum on Solana offer higher yields through MEV capture and validator diversity (DEXTools, 2026; Koinly, 2026).
The competition is driving innovation in validator design, fee structures, and composability. However, it also means that protocols are constantly seeking to integrate LSTs into more complex strategies, potentially increasing systemic risks as the “money legos” become more intertwined and opaque.
Emerging Trends and Protocols
Beyond traditional liquid staking, several trends are shaping the future:
- Liquid Restaking (LRTs): As discussed, protocols like EigenLayer and Ether.Fi are at the forefront, allowing staked assets to secure multiple networks simultaneously for additional yield. This is the fastest-growing category by TVL (KuCoin, 2026).
- Real-World Asset (RWA) Tokenization: The tokenization of traditional financial assets, such as US Treasuries and equities, is gaining traction, with institutions showing significant interest. This convergence could bring substantial liquidity and regulatory clarity to DeFi, but also necessitates robust legal frameworks and oracle solutions.
- Fixed Yield and Yield Tokenization: Moving away from volatile yields, protocols offering fixed-rate lending and yield tokenization (e.g., Pendle) are attracting more conservative and institutional capital, allowing users to hedge or lock in predictable returns (Ancilar, 2025; Dwellir, 2026). Pendle, for example, averaged $5.7 billion in TVL through 2025, up 76% year-over-year (Dwellir, 2026).
- Cross-Chain Interoperability: Solutions addressing liquidity fragmentation across multiple chains remain a key focus, with platforms like Aave V4 aiming for unified liquidity through a hub-and-spoke structure (Ancilar, 2025; Dwellir, 2026).
Recommendations: Navigating the LSD Ecosystem
For participants in the DeFi ecosystem, navigating the world of Liquid Staking Derivatives requires a blend of yield-seeking and rigorous risk management. The prevailing market conditions, characterized by reduced USD TVL but stable ETH TVL in Q2 2026, suggest a period of consolidation and a flight to quality rather than aggressive expansion.
Short-Term (Next 6-12 Months):
- Prioritize Protocol Security and Audits: Given the ongoing risk of smart contract exploits, stick to battle-tested protocols with extensive audit histories and active bug bounty programs. Regularly review security reports.
- Diversify LSD Holdings: Avoid over-reliance on a single LSD provider. While Lido offers deep liquidity, consider diversifying into more decentralized options like Rocket Pool, accepting potential trade-offs in liquidity for reduced centralization risk.
- Monitor De-pegging Risk: Be acutely aware of the potential for LSTs to de-peg from their underlying assets, especially during market volatility. Avoid overly leveraged positions built on LSTs.
- Exercise Caution with LRTs: While Liquid Restaking offers compelling yields, understand that it introduces additional layers of smart contract and slashing risk. Allocate capital cautiously and only to protocols with robust risk management frameworks.
- Focus on Real Yield: Shift focus from protocols with high, unsustainable token emissions to those generating “real yield” from protocol usage (e.g., trading fees, lending interest, or a share of staking rewards like RPL post-Saturn 1).
Long-Term (1-3 Years and Beyond):
- Advocate for Decentralization: Support protocols and initiatives that actively work to decentralize validator sets and governance, mitigating the systemic risks associated with single points of failure.
- Demand Transparency in Interconnections: The opacity of interconnected dependencies remains a significant systemic risk. Push for greater transparency in how LSTs are used across various DeFi protocols.
- Stay Informed on Regulatory Developments: Regulatory frameworks like MiCA in Europe will increasingly shape the DeFi landscape (Dwellir, 2026). Understanding these changes will be crucial for long-term participation.
- Look for Robust Risk Management Solutions: The maturation of DeFi will necessitate advanced on-chain insurance and robust risk assessment tools. Support protocols integrating these solutions.
- Evaluate Protocol Governance: Beyond simple token voting, look for evolving governance models that incorporate vote-locking, delegation, and reputation systems to foster more effective and aligned decision-making (Ancilar, 2025).
Conclusion and Key Takeaways
Liquid Staking Derivatives have been a cornerstone of DeFi’s growth, unlocking billions in capital and fostering unprecedented composability. However, the narrative for 2026 and beyond is one of critical assessment, not unbridled hype. The decline in USD-denominated TVL for LSDs in Q2 2026, juxtaposed with stable ETH TVL, underscores a market grappling with asset price volatility while maintaining a core belief in the utility of liquid staking.
The inherent trade-offs between capital efficiency and systemic risk, particularly concerning centralization, smart contract vulnerabilities, and the potential for contagion from intertwined protocols, demand vigilance. The dominance of players like Lido, while efficient, presents a clear centralization vector for Ethereum. The emergence of Liquid Restaking, while innovative, compounds these risks by layering complexity and potential for amplified slashing.
Ultimately, the long-term viability of the LSD ecosystem hinges on its ability to evolve beyond mere yield maximization towards genuine decentralization, robust security, and transparent risk management. Investors and users must approach this space with a skeptical eye, conducting thorough due diligence, diversifying risks, and actively advocating for protocols that prioritize resilience and credible neutrality over unchecked growth. The “winner-take-most” dynamic observed in open-source crypto markets (Blockworks Research, 2023) must be balanced with the fundamental need for a truly decentralized and robust financial infrastructure.
