So Sánh và Phản Biện: AI Không Phải “Thần Dược”

The gaming industry, a perennial incubator of innovation, has recently grappled with a phenomenon that promised to revolutionize its very economic fabric: blockchain gaming and its progeny, Play-to-Earn (P2E). Hailed by proponents as the dawn of true digital ownership and player empowerment, this nascent sector has, in practice, navigated a turbulent landscape of speculative bubbles, regulatory quagmires, and fundamental design flaws. As a senior analyst at DistilHub, my assessment remains skeptical: while the underlying technology holds theoretical promise, the current iteration of P2E largely prioritizes financial mechanics over compelling gameplay, a critical misstep that has repeatedly led to economic instability and user disillusionment.
The thesis is clear: despite optimistic market size projections, the P2E model, in its current form, has largely failed to build sustainable, player-centric ecosystems, instead fostering speculative environments prone to collapse. The path forward demands a radical reorientation towards genuine entertainment value, not just financial incentives.
The Ascent and Ambition: What is Blockchain Gaming and P2E?
At its core, blockchain gaming integrates decentralized ledger technology to bestow verifiable ownership of in-game assets upon players, often in the form of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Unlike traditional gaming, where digital items are locked within a publisher’s ecosystem, NFTs allow players to truly own, trade, and monetize their virtual possessions on secondary markets. This concept underpins the “Play-to-Earn” (P2E) model, where players are rewarded with cryptocurrencies or NFTs for active engagement, completing tasks, or achieving milestones within a game.
The allure is undeniable. P2E promises to transform gaming from a purely recreational activity into a participatory financial system, offering players a tangible share in the value they help create. Proponents argue that this model democratizes economic opportunities, particularly in developing countries, where earning crypto through gaming can potentially surpass local minimum wages. The global blockchain gaming market, while still a fraction of traditional gaming, has seen substantial growth, estimated at USD 17.50 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 25.14 billion in 2026, with some forecasts predicting an exponential rise to USD 1,600.9 billion by 2034 at a staggering CAGR of 59.46% (IMARC Group, 2026-2034). Other estimates place the market at USD 229.15 billion in 2025, growing to USD 279.10 billion in 2026, and reaching USD 1351.87 billion by 2034 at a CAGR of 21.80% (Fortune Business Insights, 2026-2034). The Asia-Pacific region, with its deep-rooted gaming cultures and extensive mobile penetration, currently holds the largest share of blockchain gaming revenue, capturing 46% of the market in 2025.
The Mechanics of Tokenized Worlds: NFTs, Cryptocurrencies, and Decentralized Governance
Central to the blockchain gaming ecosystem are NFTs, which confer unique digital ownership of assets ranging from characters and weapons to virtual real estate. These NFTs can be traded on open marketplaces, creating a secondary economy that operates independently of the game developer. Cryptocurrencies serve as the in-game currency, often earned through gameplay and exchangeable for other digital assets or fiat money.
Beyond simple ownership, NFTs are envisioned to offer broader utility, including:
- Token-Gated Access: Granting exclusive access to game content, events, or VIP areas based on NFT ownership.
- Soulbound NFTs: Non-transferable tokens representing in-game achievements, titles, or badges of honor.
- Governance: Empowering players with voting rights through governance NFTs to influence game development and updates.
- Interoperability: The ambitious goal of allowing assets to move seamlessly between different games and platforms, fostering a cohesive network of digital economies.
This decentralized framework, proponents argue, fosters community-driven virtual environments, where players not only play but also build and govern in-game ecosystems.
Case Study: Axie Infinity – A Beacon and a Cautionary Tale
No discussion of P2E is complete without examining Axie Infinity, a game that once epitomized the model’s explosive potential and subsequent precipitous decline. Launched by Sky Mavis, Axie Infinity allowed players to breed, battle, and trade NFT creatures called Axies, earning Smooth Love Potion (SLP) tokens for gameplay. At its peak, Axie Infinity boasted 2.7 million daily active users (DAU). Stories of players in the Philippines earning substantial income, even buying houses, fueled its meteoric rise. The game’s AXS token also saw astronomical gains, reflecting intense investor interest.
The Bright Side: Economic Empowerment and Innovation
Axie Infinity undeniably showcased the potential for economic empowerment through gaming. For many, particularly in regions with limited traditional employment opportunities, it offered a viable source of income, transforming leisure into livelihood. This real-world impact underscored the innovative aspect of P2E, demonstrating that digital assets could indeed hold tangible value and provide financial incentives beyond traditional gaming models. The game also pioneered the “scholarship” model, where NFT owners (managers) loaned Axies to new players (scholars) in exchange for a share of their earnings, lowering the barrier to entry for those unable to afford the initial NFT investment.
The Dark Side: Unsustainable Tokenomics and Security Breaches
However, Axie Infinity’s success proved to be fleeting, a stark illustration of the P2E model’s inherent fragility. The DAU count plummeted by approximately 90% from its peak to 350,000, and the price of the AXS token fell by roughly 99%. Several critical factors contributed to this “death spiral”:
- Unsustainable Tokenomics: The game’s economy relied on a steady influx of new players to sustain the value of its tokens. SLP, with an uncapped supply, faced hyperinflation as rewards outpaced demand, devaluing player earnings. This created a zero-sum economy where early adopters profited at the expense of newcomers, a characteristic often likened to a Ponzi scheme.
- Security Breach: In March 2022, the Ronin Network, Sky Mavis’s Ethereum sidechain, suffered a massive hack resulting in the theft of approximately $625 million in Ethereum and USDC. This incident severely eroded trust in the ecosystem and highlighted the significant security vulnerabilities inherent in blockchain gaming infrastructure.
- Focus on Earning Over Fun: Critics argue that Axie Infinity, like many P2E games, prioritized financial incentives over engaging gameplay, leading to a “grind” rather than genuine entertainment. Once profitability waned, players, whose primary motivation was earning, abandoned the game en masse.
- Crypto Winter and Macroeconomic Downturn: The broader crypto market downturn and events like the Terra Luna crisis and FTX bankruptcy in 2022 further exacerbated Axie Infinity’s decline, as token prices were heavily influenced by external market volatility.
“Play-to-earn was marketed as a way for everyday gamers to profit, but the real result was market instability and an endless demand for new participants. What people don’t always realize is that these models were never really about gaming or players. They were about speculation and chasing profit. Once the hype died down, most projects collapsed, leaving players holding worthless tokens or NFTs.”
— CEO of Beetroot Lab (April 2026)
The Other Side: Real Risks and What Nobody Is Saying About P2E
Despite the enthusiastic rhetoric, the blockchain gaming and P2E sector is riddled with systemic challenges that often go unaddressed by its most ardent evangelists. These are not merely growing pains but fundamental structural issues.
Economic Sustainability: The Perpetual Growth Paradox
The core economic model of many P2E games is inherently unsustainable. They often rely on a constant influx of new players to purchase expensive NFTs or in-game assets, thereby sustaining the earnings of existing players. This “greater fool” theory, where value is derived from the expectation that someone else will pay more, inevitably leads to collapse when new capital inflow slows. Token inflation, where an uncapped supply of in-game currency devalues rewards, is a recurring issue, making long-term engagement unprofitable. Adam Fern, co-founder of PoP, critically argues that blending fun with financial incentives distorts the purpose of games, leading to a situation where financial motivations inevitably take precedence over enjoyment, ultimately undermining long-term player engagement.
Evidence of this failure is abundant. A CoinGecko study evaluating 2,817 Web3 games launched between 2018 and 2023 found that more than 75% have become inactive, with an average annual failure rate of 80.8% since 2018. By 2025, investment in Web3 gaming had reportedly “nearly dried up,” with capital shifting towards AI and other sectors, leading to a collapse in the gaming sector and over 300 games announcing shutdowns. Funding for game studios crashed by 93% by 2025, and 93% of GameFi projects are considered “almost dead”.
High Barriers to Entry and Player Exploitation
While P2E promises inclusivity, many games demand significant upfront investments in NFTs or tokens, creating a high barrier to entry for the average gamer. This upfront cost can be prohibitive, especially for players in economically disadvantaged regions, who are often targeted by “scholarship” models that can resemble exploitative labor arrangements. Players are often drawn by the prospect of earning real money, leading to a scenario where gaming becomes a “full-time job” or a “grind” rather than a recreational activity, leading to burnout and dissatisfaction.
Regulatory Uncertainty and Financial Crime Risks
The intersection of gaming and financial incentives places P2E games under intense scrutiny from regulatory bodies worldwide. Varying laws around cryptocurrency and digital assets create a fragmented and uncertain regulatory landscape. There’s a significant risk that P2E tokens could be classified as unregistered securities, exposing developers to legal liabilities. Furthermore, the decentralized nature of these economies raises concerns about money laundering, illicit activities, and the potential for scams and fraudulent schemes like “rug pulls”. The lack of clear guidelines for transacting individuals also puts them at heightened risk of inadvertent criminal activity.
Technical Challenges and Security Vulnerabilities
Blockchain technology, while foundational, introduces its own set of technical hurdles. Scalability issues, high transaction fees (“gas fees”), and slow processing times can create frustrating user experiences, hindering mainstream adoption. While Layer-2 solutions and alternative blockchain protocols aim to address these, they are not yet universally adopted.
Security remains a paramount concern. Smart contract vulnerabilities, such as reentrancy attacks, integer overflows, and access control flaws, can lead to significant financial losses. Cross-chain bridges, essential for interoperability, are particularly vulnerable, accounting for 69% of total funds stolen from crypto projects in 2022. The Ronin Network hack, which saw over $600 million stolen, stands as a stark reminder of these risks.
Environmental Concerns
The energy consumption of blockchain networks, particularly those relying on proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanisms, has drawn significant criticism for its environmental impact. While Ethereum’s transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) in September 2022 significantly reduced its carbon footprint, the reputational damage to NFT gaming was already done during its critical growth period. The minting and trading of in-game assets, and on-chain gameplay, directly contribute to emissions, demanding sustainable solutions from the industry.
Comparison with Traditional Gaming Economies
The stark contrast between P2E and traditional gaming economies highlights the former’s fundamental missteps. Traditional games, while often criticized for their centralized control and lack of true asset ownership, excel at delivering engaging gameplay, immersive storytelling, and long-term viability through iterative development, expansions, and competitive ecosystems. Their monetization models, primarily through game sales, subscriptions, and cosmetic microtransactions, are generally understood and accepted by players. The value proposition is entertainment first, with any secondary markets for items emerging organically from player demand and rarity, not as a core design principle.
P2E, conversely, has often inverted this hierarchy, prioritizing “earning” over “playing.” This creates a conflict of interest for players, where the pursuit of financial gain can overshadow the enjoyment of the game itself. Traditional gaming’s focus on intrinsic rewards (fun, challenge, social interaction) often leads to more sustainable engagement than P2E’s reliance on extrinsic, monetary incentives.
Unique Insight: The “GameFi Dilemma” and the Rise of “Play-and-Own”
The fundamental flaw in the initial P2E paradigm can be termed the “GameFi Dilemma”: the inherent tension between creating genuinely entertaining games and designing financially sustainable token economies. Most P2E projects failed because they attempted to be both a compelling game and a robust financial instrument simultaneously, often sacrificing the former for the latter. The market has consistently shown that players prioritize fun and engagement over speculative earning potential. When the “earn” component diminishes, the “play” component alone is rarely strong enough to retain users.
However, an important shift is emerging from the ashes of failed P2E experiments: the rise of “Play-and-Own” (P2O) models. This evolution, championed by some developers, seeks to prioritize gameplay quality and sustainability, with true asset ownership as a secondary benefit rather than the primary driver. In P2O, assets have value, but earning is not the central draw. Instead, the focus is on creating games that are inherently worth playing, where digital ownership enhances the experience rather than defining it. Examples like Zeeverse are beginning to implement land sales systems that distribute game ownership among players, connecting the ecosystem to real markets through protocols like Forest Protocol, with its NFT land sales reaching $2 million. This represents a crucial re-calibration, moving away from the speculative “Play-to-Earn” to a more sustainable “Play-and-Own” that aligns with traditional gaming’s core value proposition: entertainment.
Evaluation: Who Should Engage, Who Should Exercise Extreme Caution?
Who Should Consider Engaging with Blockchain Gaming / P2E (with caveats):
- Early Adopters and Innovators: Individuals with a high tolerance for risk and a deep understanding of blockchain technology, who are keen to explore emerging paradigms.
- Developers Focused on Sustainable Models: Game studios committed to prioritizing compelling gameplay and robust, non-inflationary tokenomics that do not solely rely on new player acquisition.
- Investors with Long-Term Vision: Those willing to invest in projects that demonstrate genuine innovation, strong development teams, and a clear roadmap for delivering entertainment value, not just speculative returns.
- Players Seeking True Digital Ownership: Individuals who value the ability to own, trade, and potentially port their in-game assets across platforms, provided the underlying game offers a genuinely fun experience.
Who Should Exercise Extreme Caution (or avoid entirely):
- Casual Gamers Seeking Passive Income: The dream of “earning a living” from P2E has proven to be largely unsustainable and often leads to exploitation. The market is volatile, and returns are rarely guaranteed.
- Individuals with Low Risk Tolerance: The high volatility of cryptocurrency and NFT markets, coupled with significant security risks, makes this space unsuitable for those who cannot afford substantial financial losses.
- Anyone Unfamiliar with Blockchain Technology: The complexities of digital wallets, gas fees, private key management, and smart contract interactions present significant onboarding barriers and potential pitfalls for the uninitiated.
- Those Prioritizing Pure Entertainment: If your primary goal is simply to play engaging games, traditional gaming offers a far more mature, reliable, and diverse landscape without the added financial complexities and risks of P2E.
- Investors Chasing Short-Term Gains: The P2E market has demonstrated its susceptibility to rapid boom-and-bust cycles. Chasing quick profits is a high-risk endeavor that has left many holding worthless assets.
Conclusion: Rebuilding Trust in a Fractured Landscape
The narrative surrounding blockchain gaming and Play-to-Earn models has shifted dramatically from unbridled optimism to a more sober, critical assessment. While the vision of true digital ownership and player-driven economies remains compelling, the reality has been fraught with challenges. The industry has burned through an estimated $15 billion in pursuit of a token-based future, yet players have largely failed to materialize in significant, sustained numbers. The GameFi sector attracted 62.5% of Web3 venture capital in 2022, but by 2025, that figure had plummeted to single digits, a clear indication of investor disillusionment.
Key Takeaways and Actionable Advice:
- Gameplay First, Economics Second: The most critical lesson from the P2E crash is that a game must be inherently fun and engaging to succeed, regardless of its monetization model. Developers must prioritize intrinsic rewards over extrinsic ones.
- Sustainable Tokenomics are Non-Negotiable: Future blockchain games must design robust, non-inflationary token economies that do not rely on perpetual growth or the “greater fool” theory. This requires sophisticated economic modeling and a clear understanding of value creation beyond speculative trading.
- Simplify Onboarding and User Experience: The complexity of Web3 technology remains a significant barrier to mainstream adoption. Streamlined onboarding processes, intuitive interfaces, and integrated fiat on-ramps are essential to reduce friction.
- Embrace “Play-and-Own”: The industry should pivot from “Play-to-Earn” to “Play-and-Own” models, where verifiable digital ownership enhances a genuinely enjoyable game rather than being its primary purpose. This fosters long-term engagement and reduces speculative pressure.
- Address Regulatory and Security Gaps: Developers must proactively engage with regulators and prioritize robust security measures to protect player assets and build trust. Transparency and adherence to evolving legal frameworks are paramount.
- Environmental Responsibility: The shift to energy-efficient blockchain solutions (e.g., PoS) and carbon offsetting initiatives is crucial for the industry’s long-term reputation and viability.
The future of gaming, if it truly integrates blockchain, will not be defined by the speculative frenzy of P2E’s early days. Instead, it will be forged by developers who understand that technology serves entertainment, not the other way around. Only by building genuinely captivating games with carefully considered, sustainable economies can blockchain gaming hope to transcend its “death spiral” reputation and carve out a legitimate, lasting place in the vast entertainment landscape.
